The campground sits at an elevation of 3,600 feet and has a lot of shade. It is a place for a lunchtime respite, to gather strength and the mental fortitude to face “the wall,” the final stretch of trail that goes up about 3,000 feet in three miles. The trail descends along an ancient native american route following the bright angel fault line down to indian garden campground, our home for the next 2 nights.

Campers can reach the campground via the bright angel trail and is 4.8 miles below the south rim.

The bright angel trailhead is located in grand canyon village on the south rim just west of the bright angel lodge near the beginning of the west rim road shuttle stop. Spending two nights at indian garden, we enjoy the shade and water of this spectacular oasis. Indian garden is situated northeast of grand canyon village. You will end the backpacking portion of the hike at indian garden campground by garden creek and beneath a canopy of cottonwood trees.

Day hike destinations include plateau point (with panoramic views of the colorado river). Indian garden is 4.8 miles below the south rim. Accessing the campground requires descending more than 3,000 feet into the grand canyon.
