The bright angel trailhead is located in grand canyon village on the south rim just west of the bright angel lodge near the beginning of the west rim road shuttle stop. Starting elevation at south kaibab trail head 7260 ft. This is just a guideline and allows time to hydrate and take a couple quick breaks. The trail is primarily used for hiking, camping, and backpacking and is best used from september until may.

Spending two nights at indian garden, we enjoy the shade and water of this spectacular oasis. Indian garden is situated northeast of grand canyon village. You will end the backpacking portion of the hike at indian garden campground by garden creek and beneath a canopy of cottonwood trees.
Day hike destinations include plateau point (with panoramic views of the colorado river). Indian garden is 4.8 miles below the south rim. Accessing the campground requires descending more than 3,000 feet into the grand canyon.
