Container Water Garden Mosquitoes
Instead, create a small container water garden that makes a big impact on your yard.
Container water garden mosquitoes. One exception is water lotus, which is a large water plant. A container water garden is a small aboveground pond that can provide a permanent source of water for birds, chipmunks, and squirrels. There’s never a need to swap out all the water.
I’ve never created a water garden in a pot, but now i want to! If placed well, it can become a beautiful focal point of your small garden. I just wonder if there would be a problem with standing water and mosquitoes… well, there’s only one way to find out!
Don’t let a swarm of whining mosquitoes ruin your next barbecue—there are plenty of container plants you can grow in the garden to naturally deter mosquitoes from your property. Before you place your plants, add 1/2 inch or so of pea gravel to the bottom of the container to help keep soil in place in the water and to give a little weight to the container to keep it where you want it. A waterfall, a fountain, or an air bubbler keeps the surface water constantly moving, which will keep female mosquitoes from laying their eggs.
Or you can install a small pump in container ponds, such as half barrels, to create a fountain or to swirl the water gently, which will also discourage egg laying. I grow each of my water plants in its own nursery pot with clay soil. Add no more than three plants if the container's diameter is 18 inches or less.
You can create a simple fountain, or grow pretty pond plants as well. If you have a small garden, or simply don't want to go to all the work of digging out an in ground water feature, diy container water gardens are an easy and fun project. You don’t even need a pump!
If small aquarium fish or goldfish are in the container, they will eat any mosquito larvae. The design principles of arranging plants in a conventional container apply to a water garden as well. Mosquitoes only become a problem in water garden containers that are not maintained.
