Throughout the 19 th century, the fort saw many great american and international figures. With the federal government taking control of immigration and the opening of ellis island, castle garden was transformed into the new york aquarium, one of the nation’s first public aquariums. But the new york aquarium is the oldest continually operating aquarium in the united states, having opened in castle garden in battery park, manhattan in 1896.
